SINNERS

Let’s talk about Sinners, the kind of film that creeps up on you, slowly gets under your skin, and leaves you thinking about it for days. I watched it a couple of week's ago with one of my younger brother's expecting just another low-budget thriller, but honestly? It delivered way more than I expected.

First of all, the story doesn’t try to do too much, which is kind of rare these days. No wild multiverses or forced twists. Just a dark, slow-burn look at guilt, secrets, and the consequences of trying to bury the past. It’s quiet in the best way, no flashy effects, just a moody atmosphere and characters that feel real in an eerily sort of way.

What Stood Out

What I really liked (and lowkey envied as a student filmmaker) was how much they did with so little. No crazy set pieces or effects just good acting, smart editing, and a director who clearly knows what silence can do. There's one scene where two characters are just sitting across from each other, not saying much, and it’s so uncomfortable. You can feel everything boiling underneath, and the camera never cuts away.

Stuff I Took Away

Watching Sinners reminded me how powerful restraint can be in filmmaking. You don’t always need a huge budget, crazy editing, or even constant dialogue. Sometimes the best tension comes from just holding a shot and letting an actor act and my word were Michael B. Jordan and Hailey Steinfeld's acting in this movie were absolutely phenomenal

Final Thoughts

There are a couple of pacing issues, and a subplot that doesn’t quite land. But honestly, I’d rather watch an imperfect film with a clear tone and purpose than a polished one with no soul. Sinners might not be for everyone, but if you're into character-driven slow-burns with a hint of moral rot, it’s absolutely worth your time.

9 out of 10 score for me and I do hope there can be a follow up film although it is not needed however the post credit scene does make way for a potential sequel should the director Ryan Coogler choose to make one.
